The landlocked region of Umbria is home to the creative winery of Cesarini Sartori - the SIGNAE estate of Bastardo.

This austerely beautiful landscape in central Italy has a dry climate and stony soil, which forces the vines to struggle and in so doing, produces grapes that make excellent dusty reds with deep flavours. The family-run estate focusses on local grapes, to create flavours that represent the Umbria terroir. In their wine portfolio they feature Umbria’s signature grape, the thick-skinned and powerful Sagrantino (the "healthy heart grape"), which produces dense, well-structured and muscular red wines. The Grechetto vine is also a successful Umbria grape and the winery employs advanced vinification techniques for working with this local variety for balanced, fruit white wines. The estate strive to maintain the territorial identity of Umbria by avoiding the use of chemicals and instead utilise modern techniques to bring out the full potential of the local grapes. Combining a love of the Umbrian countryside and winemaking traditions, with an interest in the latest wine production technology and processes, the wines of SIGNAE are an exciting balance of nature and nurture, old and new, plus the magic ingredient – dedication to the life of a wine artisan.
