Medium Body, Dry (Malvasia, Trebbiano). DOCG. 13% Alc.
4-stars Vini Buoni d'Italia; Gold Medal Mundus Vini; Silver Medal Decanter; 91/100 Falstaff.
This Frascati Superiore DOCG is a delicious blend of Malvasia and Trebbiano, lovingly crafted by the team at Poggio Le Volpi of Lazio. Notes of grapefruit, underripe pineapple, ripe lime, or lime zest, and certainly those classic almonds notes. There is an almost 'Riesling-like' character on the nose (like the slate notes from Germany) but this is likely the minerality that comes through from the particular soil of the area (ancient volcanic tuff). This wine will pair well with light dishes, but can also enhance flavoursome foods like salmon or dim sum.
WINERY NOTES: From Malvasia di Candia and Malvasia del Lazio grapes with a small percentage of Trebbiano, word coming from greek which means 'tale' that is what we'd like from this wine: the tale and voice of our land and traditions. Bright pale yellow. Sensation of tropical fruit, then hazelnut, orange flower, aromatic herbs and salty minerality. Smooth in the mouth, fruity and floral, sapid and fresh with a very long persistence. Great on sea food starter, risotti, different preparations with fish, poultry, fresh cheeses or Spaghetti alla Carbonara.
NB: Frascati - a white wine named after the town just south of Rome - is a very popular style of wine from south Italy boasting a long history of appreciation, from being a favourite of wine drinkers of Ancient Rome, to Renaissance popes and century travelling artists, right up to the La Dolce Vita generation of the 1960s ... and of course today!
The DOCG level Frascati Superiore offers a great example of how volcanic soils can create complex wines that offer a refreshing acidity balanced by rich tropical fruit notes!
